Textile & Structural
Tenthouse creates structural solutions for tented wilderness developments, from custom retreats to premium,
tailored-to-brand resorts, and rustic nature camps. It’s a design-driven, deadline-focused, production company with a
wealth of in-house expertise. The project managers work with the designers, logistics experts, and site teams throughout
the project life cycle to ensure that the projects are delivered on time, to the exacting Tenthouse® Structures quality
standards.
Motor Industry
The role of Industrial Designer at Motorhome-World encapsulates everything within standard design practice. Duties include meeting with clients, analyzing their body language and conversation, and using these insights to create a brief tailored specifically to their needs, with a clear distinction between what the client wants and what the client requires.
The position involves designing motorhomes that accurately represent the client’s vision, supported by a strong understanding of building principles, legal regulations related to heavy vehicles, and the safety requirements necessary during the design phase. The role also encompasses hands-on work with materials and systems such as wood, metal, air-conditioning systems, and chassis structures.
Metal/Refrigeration Industry
Experience at Concord Refrigeration provided a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes and industry dynamics, where aesthetics and functionality must be balanced within a competitive environment.
Key contributions include the development of the first self-contained fridges to rival competitors, resulting in the acquisition of clients from rival companies. Processes were optimized to streamline the workflow from paper design to 3D CAD, which was then directly translated into NC codes for laser and bending machines, eliminating separate programming steps. An algorithm was implemented to automatically calculate sheet metal quantities, reducing logistical strain and improving operational efficiency.
Work in the R&D department offered extensive exposure to office operations, project management, and collaboration with diverse teams, enhancing overall design and production effectiveness.
Business, branding & design
A team of five individuals—three from fashion design and two from industrial design—collaborated to establish a small business, leveraging each member’s unique skills to enhance operations and ensure its success. The objective of the 5K Project is to achieve a minimum profit of R5,000 while applying the knowledge and skills acquired over the past three years, providing practical insight into the challenges and rewards of running a business.
This experiential learning model emphasizes hands-on engagement and research, supported by guidance from academic staff throughout the process. Contributions from a graphic design team further strengthened the business through branding, marketing, social media strategy, and professional photography.
